Historic Madison

September 28, 2015

On my last full day in Georgia, my friend and I spontaneously decided to take a detour into the historic district of Madison. Since I'm a sucker for historical homes, I insisted on taking a tour of the Rogers House, Rose Cottage, and Heritage Hall (tour info here). Each tour was led by a docent, so we learned all sorts of interesting information about the original owners of each home. For example, a few of the windows at Heritage Hall had names written on the glass (see the last photo above). Apparently, it was a common practice for any engaged woman of the household to etch her own name and her fiancée's name into one of the windows using her engagement ring! It sounds like such a sentimental tradition, but people actually did it to test whether or not the diamond in the ring was real haha!

Anyways, if you missed any of my previous Georgia posts, you can check them out below:

A Covington Diary

September 20, 2015
It's been about two weeks since I was in Georgia, but I still have plenty of photos to share! On my first day there, my friend took me to one of my favorite little towns: Covington. At the last minute, we decided to head over to Bradley's Bar-B-Que for a delicious (and super cheap!) barbecue dinner.

Next, we strolled around the town square while I took a few photos of buildings that I recognized from the Vampire Diaries. When I visited last year, we actually went on a guided tour around a few of the show's locations, so it was exciting to see it all again. Plus the whole area is just so pretty (and so unlike where I live in California).

And of course, we saved the best for last: dessert! An ice cream shop called Scoops is located right on the town square, so we stopped inside and sampled a few of their yummy flavors. I ended up going with their banana pudding ice cream (which I highly recommend!). Of course as we were enjoying our ice cream, a huge thunderstorm rolled in and we had to take cover underneath one of the buildings. Luckily, it only lasted for a few minutes (and I got to experience some true Georgian weather lol).
I'll be posting one last round of photos later this week!

The Whistle Stop Cafe

September 7, 2015

I've been down in Georgia for the past couple of days and it has been so much fun exploring all of the different towns that are outside of Atlanta! Yesterday, my friend and I drove over to the city of Juliette to grab lunch at the Whistle Stop Cafe. It's the same cafe where the movie Fried Green Tomatoes was filmed! Now I have to admit, I haven't actually seen the movie but everyone's been telling me that it's pretty great. I plan on watching it as soon as I get home!
A few other tidbits:

+ I tried an authentic fried green tomato and I actually really liked it! The Whistle Stop Cafe serves their fried tomatoes with a radish sauce that gives them a bit of a kick. Highly recommended

+ Did you know that in the South, most people place rice inside of their salt shakers? Apparently it keeps the salt crystals from sticking together due to the humidity. I never knew that! You can kind of see the rice in the fourth photo above.

+ Juliette is filled with all sorts of cute little shops! There's one called the Honey Comb that sells the yummiest honey-filled candies. I bought a bag (for only $2.75!) but half of them are already gone!
